Como Women loses 3-0 against Sassuolo

Como Women loses 3-0 against Sassuolo in the 16th matchday of Serie A Women's eBay, staying at 22 points in the standings.

Como Women started strongly in the initial minutes of the game, trying to trouble the opposing defence with long-distance shots, particularly through Nischler, who tried to surprise Durand in goal. At the half-hour mark, Bergersen from the left served Kerr, who, turning around, missed the target, and shortly after, the Norwegian challenged Durand with a dangerous cross-shot. At the 36th minute, Sabatino headed a free kick from Gilardi but failed to direct it on goal. Towards the end of the first half, Nischler came close to scoring from a corner, but the header went wide.

In the second half, at the 54th minute, the key moment of the match occurred: Gilardi, in an attempt to clear a ball outside the area, fouled Clelland and was sent off for a last-man foul. Coach Sottili made a substitution, bringing on Soggiu for Kramzar, who made his debut between the posts for the Lariani.

Sassuolo immediately took advantage of their numerical superiority and took the lead in the 57th minute through Sabatino, who scored with a precise right-footed shot into the bottom corner.

Como Women tried to react in the 73rd minute with a double chance for Del Estal: first with a close-range shot that Durand deflected for a corner, then with a header from the centre of the area on a cross by Nischler that went well wide.

Towards the end, Sassuolo sealed the game. In the 83rd minute, Chmielinski doubled the lead with a splendid free-kick from outside the area that went under the crossbar. The Neroverde midfielder repeated himself in the 88th minute, scoring a brace, as in the first match, with a precise low diagonal shot, setting the final score at 0-3.

The next match for Como Women will be on Sunday, 2 February at 15:00 against Lazio, at the “Ferruccio” stadium in Seregno (MB).

The words of Stefano Sottili

On the match episode: “The sending-off changed the course of the match, at a time when there was no pressure: it was an individual mistake that certainly influenced the result. Immediately after the sending-off, Sassuolo's goal came in a situation where we could have done better.”

On the match and the team's growth path: "The reaction of the girls, after the disadvantage, was very much present. We had more than one chance to try to equalise the match, not only with Del Estal, but also in scrambles, with shots by Nischler and Petzelberger. Then we conceded the 2-0 goal from a set-piece and that was game over. However, it doesn't change anything at all, we're a team that is on a journey, even with gambles, with girls who need to make mistakes to grow, so this can happen during the season. It is clear that we need to make the leap in quality. Mistakes can happen, but we need to have the ability to limit them and not repeat them shortly after. It's obvious that we need to improve, we can't mix excellent performances and then fall back into similar mistakes in a short time. If we want to grow and raise the collective and personal bar, these are situations where we cannot afford to make mistakes.

On the girls' performance: "The unity of the group, the girls' cohesion and their attitude are elements that have never been in doubt and from which we will start again. The players, until the sending off, played the match they had to play, we conceded only one chance in the first half with Sabatini, for the rest they played the right match against a healthy opponent who completely changed their way of playing which benefited them, closing down spaces and plays a lot”.
