The winning streak is broken: Como Women defeated by Juventus

"An excessive result, I don't blame the girls for anything."

The winning streak of Como Women is broken as they are defeated 4-1 by Juventus, the league leaders, in the 11th round of Serie A at the 'Ferruccio' stadium.

After a great start from the Como team, who took the lead in the 7th minute with Kerr’s goal from a backheel assist by Nischler, Massimiliano Canzi’s side began to grow into the game. Just a few minutes later, Juventus equalized with Bonansea’s header.

In the 16th minute, Como Women came close to regaining the lead with Del Estal, who was later forced to leave the field in the 24th minute after taking a knock.

Juventus, however, fought back and took a 2-1 lead in the 31st minute with a header from Girelli, and then made it 3-1 in injury time through Caruso.

In the second half, Giulia Ruma made her season debut in goal, replacing Gilardi, who was injured after a collision with Cantore during the build-up to Juventus' third goal.

In the second half, there was room for one more goal, as Schatzer sealed the game with a first-time shot in the 72nd minute that hit the post and went into the net behind Ruma, making it 4-1 and confirming the final score.

Next, Como Women will face Roma at the 'Tre Fontane' stadium in their next match, scheduled for Friday, December 6, at 20:30.

Post-match comments: Miriam Picchi and Stefano Sottili

Miriam Picchi shared her thoughts after the match: “We could have definitely done more. We’re disappointed with the result, especially with the goals we conceded. There were some lapses in concentration that we haven’t had in recent matches, but these will be points we work on in the coming days to improve and close the gap with the top teams.”

Regarding the key moments of the match: “We weren’t lucky with injuries in the first half. We certainly paid for the forced substitutions of Del Estal and Gilardi, but unfortunately, these things happen in football, and we need to learn to move past them.”

On the upcoming match against Roma: “We’ll have some players joining the national teams during the week, but the squad will continue to work as always, with full commitment. We’re facing another top team, but as we’ve shown so far, nothing is impossible. We’ll prepare for that match in the best way possible and give everything we’ve got.”

Stefano Sottili, the coach, commented: “We gave it our all; a few incidents in the first half put us at a disadvantage by two goals. It’s a shame because our approach was good, and we scored an excellent goal. It’s normal to suffer against the physicality and quality of the league leaders.” He continued, “The regret is giving away two goals—unfortunately, these things can happen. The team held their ground even in the second half, and I believe that, despite the result being excessive, there’s very little we can fault these girls for.”

On the injuries and absences: “Injuries certainly affect the substitutions because you're limited in your choices, and the forced changes had an impact on the match’s outcome.”

On the next game: “The match against Roma? We’ll think about that later.”
